Update on The First UK Underground Farmers & Craft Market

March 27, 2010 20 Comments Filed Under: Uncategorized

On the 28th March The Underground Restaurant will be hosting the first Underground Farmers & Craft Market in the United Kingdom. There’s been one in San Francisco started by Iso Rabins which was a tremendous success. They’ve just had their third underground farmer’s market and there will be a conference ‘Kitchen Table Talks’ on the 29th of March in San Francisco with the movers and shakers of the SF underground food movement.

I want to encourage first timers, locavores and quirky Londoners to come and sell their wares (free for stallholders)…it’s gonna be a mashup between an edgy cool entrepreneurial anti-establishment anarchist fair, Borough market and…a school fete!
This is also a fantastic opportunity to meet some supperclub hosts and hostesses outside of their dinners, giving you a chance to chat to them.
There will be tastings and a cooking demo by MsMarmitelover…how to make mini focaccia shots…then we will eat them hot out of the Aga.
Other demonstrations include a talk on making cheese in Peckham airing cupboards by @handyface, basket weaving with Terence McSweeney (who will also show kids how to make little woven fish for £2), wine tasting with tengreenbottles.com….
Do bring cash to buy things as no credit card facilities will be here…however there is a cashpoint machine at the nearest tube.
Stall holders so far…
Aforkfulofspaghetti will sell her chocolate goods
Pash & friends will sell cordials, paintings and chutneys
The Shed supperclub will sell food and her mum will sell her knitted kitchenware and is available for a knitting surgery
New supperclub hostess Afternoon tea at 410 ( @MissJordi_M ) will sell cupcakes
Crumbelina will be selling cakes and other baked goods possibly from my bedroom
Alexis, supperclub hostess of Lexeats will sell gorgeously kitsch 50s handmade serviettes
Soups, stews, cakes and marmalade from Kitchenconfidential
Gloria Nicol of The Laundry will be bringing screenprinted kitchen textiles and preserves
Vegan cafe Pogo cafe will be showing their fermented food (kimchee), vegan baked goods, vegan walnut and cashew cheese.
Food blogger Kavita of Kaveyeats will be selling her authentic indian chutneys and jams
Paladar hostesses Carla and Lesley of The Secret Gardens will sell Spanish goods and tortilla espanola…ole!
Blogger and crafter extraordinaire BelgianWaffling will be selling her ‘arse biscuits’ and other handmade items…
Charlie Beldam of Cotswold Gold who will be selling his rapeseed oil
Euroburner Emily of House of Chutney will be selling Peach Date & Chilli, Beetroot & Orange and Spiced Tomato chutneys with tempero, a garlic seasoning (pictured below). They talked ‘chutney chat’ about the Underground Farmers & Craft Market on Resonance FM with George Barker at 9pm on 19th March.
The Hatcham supperclub hostess Rachael Curzons will be selling her curds
Supperclub hostess Kitchen Jezebel of The Last Supperclub will be talking and demonstrating how to make natural cosmetics & selling craftware
Scarlett Cannon, allotmenteer, will sell her t-shirts and plants
Samphire will be coming from Norfolk to sell their prize winning sausages and pies (Giles Coren’s favourite pie)
Porridgelady, current holder of the speciality trophy for the Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championships, will be showing how to make the perfect bowl of porridge and selling spurtles!
Little Miss Delicious will be selling her handmade jewellery (below)
Emily Boyce and her friend Immy will be selling veggie sausage rolls, cheese straws, savoury biscuits etc, homemade pasta and sauces, candles in tea cups (made by her sister) and biscuits, fruit compotes and granola.
Jane Ennis will be selling knitwear
Potters Lane Bakery will be selling baked goods…
Dazzle1411 offer a wide range of bespoke products covered in crystals such as handmade phone covers for Blackberries

5.00 handyface shows and talks about cheesemaking in peckham
5.30 Neil Spencer will be talking about astrology and food
6.00 Kitchen Jezebel will talk and show how to make own cosmetics

If I’ve left anybody out please let me know…
This event is listed, along with other farmers markets and food events around Britain on Henrietta Green’s site: Food Lovers Britain
This list will be updated as more people contact me to sell their stuff… and if anyone would like to run a workshop, to teach a food/craft related skill, please get in touch [email protected]
Many people make great produce at home, but do not have a commercial kitchen. They are often intimidated by high startup prices and the commitment of a conventional farmers market. This Underground farmer’s market is an opportunity for them to test the waters, sell what they make. I’m not charging stallholders…which is a reversal of the usual thing where stallholders pay and the punters come in for free. But I want to encourage people who may not have done a stall before…therefore the goods will be unique and individual not just the usual suspects! But guests pay £5.50 entry fee which will be well worth it as I’m sure you can see…via http://www.wegottickets.com/event/68711 If you book a ticket and last minute, some friends or family want to accompany you…they can pay on the door.

My least favorite is looks great, can't wait to try this. Sometimes there are hundreds of these and not a single one about whether or not the recipe is a complete waste of time. Why comment if you haven't tried it? Come back when you have something useful to share.

I went to @hide_restaurant in Piccadilly, they are I went to @hide_restaurant in Piccadilly, they are now doing breakfast & brunch. The restaurant design is stunning in itself, from the gaudi-esque central staircase, to the table decorations, to the uniforms of the waiting staff. Chef @olliedabous has developed an incredible menu: from standards like avocado on toast (beautifully presented with edible flowers & 2 lightly poached eggs), pain au chocolat (buckwheat), french toast with blueberry compote ( cloud-like, soft, light), British @exmoorcaviar with sourdough, mango with kefir lime zest, an extraordinary tea & coffee menu ( Brazilian single estate coffee) Yuzu indigo tea. You can spend a lot. Or a little. Worth it for the design, the baking, the feeling of experiencing a rare treat. #london #breakfast #brunch #review #invitation
My niece @rachaelrodgers wedding to Luca Venezia @ My niece @rachaelrodgers wedding to Luca Venezia @cursesforever. It’s been featured in US vogue. Style, good food, great music, stunning backgrounds of mount vesuvius & Naples were the order of the day. Or should I say 3 days which is how long it lasted. The bride wore white but it was a vintage @viviennewestwood corset (one of only 5 existing, the other 3 are in fashion museums), and a flowery bikini to cut the delicious rose 🌹 and cherry 🍒 cake. Hawaiian barbie & La Cicciolina were inspirations. The guests were equally stunning. #naples #wedding #bridestyle

This vegetarian met the worlds most famous butcher This vegetarian met the worlds most famous butcher @dariocecchinimacellaio whose shop is located in Panzano, Tuscany. He trained my favourite food writer @bill.buford in butchery. I told him I didn’t eat meat & he twinkled ‘to beef or not to beef’. He has a Clark Gable elegance: moustache, slicked back hair, charm, & a designer shirt depicting cows from @cotondoux paris. I instinctively wore a red & white striped dress which matched the colours of his shop, the red & white of the surgeon. They serve you glasses of Dario’s own Chianti Classico complete with straw bottomed ‘fiasco’. Now where else do you get that? When I return I will try the vegetarian menu at his restaurant opposite. #butcher #panzano #tuscany #chiantishire #chianticlassico #foodsiena #foodreportage
On a very steep street in siena, Tuscany. They’v On a very steep street in siena, Tuscany. They’ve had to be creative with the table legs. We went to the Palio horse race in the shell-shaped piazza where the passion & downright enmity of the different contrada or districts, each represented by an animal or mascot, was on display. The riders go bareback. It’s the horse that wins not the jockey. A riderless horse can win. There are many false starts, a massive explosion going boom in the square each time which led kids to cry. We waited for hours in the cheap seats- the burnt ochre brickwork of the centre. While tourists at windows paid 600 euros for the privilege. I loved the singing, like football chants but operatic- lots of finger pointing at each other. After I went to a contrada dinner on the streets of Siena, a rare opportunity. For 35 euros you attend the largest ‘supper club’ ever- 800 people, 4 courses, generous helpings of chianti. The servers are local teenagers. I wore my ‘Oca’ or goose scarf around my shoulders, looking like a girl guide. A bucket list item ticked off. I only wish my daughter @siennamarla was with me. #travel #food #italy #chiantishire #siena #palio #supperclub #oca #contrada

I recently completed the 3 day @heathostile train I recently completed the 3 day @heathostile training course. On the last day I was kidnapped by ex-special forces for a few hours & learnt how to deal with compliance training & a hostile environment. It was one of the most interesting experiences of my life. 3 intense days of combat first aid, navigation & how to survive in a war zone. I handled short, long guns, mortars, grenades, bullets, and tourniquet & bandaged an amputee. I learnt where to sit in a car, where to hide from a bullet, where to protect myself if in a car. It was brilliant. Highly recommended for any journalists, photographers, cameramen, charity workers, paramedics going into any difficult environment say a disaster or war. The stories from the tutors & the other participants were so interesting. My piece on it out soon. Book a course: https://hostile-environment.co.uk/ They also do jungle & desert training. I’d love to join the Antarctic expedition. Anyway that’s me hooded in the front. #adventures #het #hostileenvironmenttraining #experiences #travel
Bundoran beach, Donegal. I spent a week knocking o Bundoran beach, Donegal. I spent a week knocking on doors, going to libraries, searching through graveyards for my Irish forebears. It’s really hard to find information prior to 1850. I found this in last years trip to Arbroath in Scotland. Headstones wear out, records are lost or burnt in a fire, everybody has the same name and are known by nicknames, successive children have the same first name, that usually means they died and the next one is called by the same thing. Women did have children out of wedlock, and people remarried more often than you’d think, plus families fall out & never see each other again. I learnt that my Irish great grandfather michael went to Glasgow & met a woman who came from a similar place: somewhere wild & beautiful by the sea. Then they and their children came to london. Chasing the work & the money always. Politics and economics matter for they push people around from rural to city. And now we rodgers are Londoners. #ireland #scotland #family #travel #roots
