Jean’s signature dish: ‘sausage surprise’
While soap stars and fading actors have been hogging the cookbook shelves and cooking telly for the last few years, conversely, the popularity of food programming seems to be filtering through to soaps like Eastenders. Ian Beale has long been the fish n chip king, the Massood family manage the curry house, a succession of owners have run the cafe and there was even a moment when Kat Slater and Alfie Moon ran an ‘underground pub’. But there are encouraging signs that food is beginning to be taken seriously. In January, Jane Beale, Ian’s doormat ex-wife was offered a job as a sous chef at a top restaurant in Wales. Her previous background in food amounted to cooking fish and chips and pub grub. Her training for this sous chef job consisted of a sequence in which Ian and his kids sat at a table and made a series of unreasonable demands, attempting to reproduce the strain of working in a top restaurant, while Jane tried to keep up, mopping her brow with stress, in the kitchen. There was talk that she would eventually move to Paris and open a restaurant there.

Beefcake Ray obviously feels passionately about food; last night he tried to give Bianca a cooking lesson. Bianca was dubious about spending money on olive oil as it “costs twice as much and you can’t even taste it”; she laughed at the idea of adding herbs – “frying grass?” – and garlic: “I’ve been to France and they stink”.
Bianca’s kids didn’t like Ray’s fresh home-cooked food: “We prefer chicken nuggets”. “Now I know how Jamie Oliver feels”, sighed Ray.

Is this really symptomatic of how working class Britons feel about food? We love spice – curry is our national dish. Food shows such as Masterchef and the Great British Bake Off are incredibly popular but the producer of Saturday Kitchen was philosophical as he told me that “people are watching food but not cooking it”.
Jean replaced Ray as lunchtime cook yesterday in the Queen Vic and did her famous ‘sausage surprise’ which appears to consist of heaps of fried onions, layers of baked beans, mashed potato, topped with sausages. Has anyone ever cooked this? Dot makes a decent cake (here is one of her pudding recipes) I believe, and her retro style is bang on trend. Will there eventually be an Eastenders cookbook? Would better food on soaps improve diets? Would Jamie’s food revolution be more effective written into the script of ‘Stenders and Corrie?

    A really interesting post! I think sometimes British people can be quite disconnected with cooking and ingredients. Especially young people and certainly not enough is done in schools to teach them how to budget for and cook cheap, nourishing meals.
    Nor do I think British lifestyle lends itself well to thinking about cooking, unlike other European cultures there can be a real emphasis on working overtime in British offices, meaning that office workers coming in at 8pm, who have not been taught properly about cooking and ingredients find it easier to microwave something for five minutes, rather then spend 20 minutes making some soup, or pasta or salad.

    Case in point, recently my friend saw me make spaghetti bolognese and was bewildered to find I had made the sauce from scratch not from a jar! x

    I think Ray's interest in food is really important, it could influence people if Eastenders started to talk about food.
    I know what you mean about making quite simple stuff from scratch. Once I was in Florida and I made a Margerita cocktail. I noticed all my mum's Florida friends were looking curiously, then I heard one of them say "Did ya see that? She's actually making Margeritas and not from a mix!"

    This is a really interesting question. It's hard to know whether soap writers are reflecting reality or what they think is happening. And is it their role to reflect reality, educate or just provide some entertainment?
    I used to be complete 'Stenders addict, but haven't watched for years, but it doesn't sound like much has changed in the food department! Although it sounds like Ray is supposed to represent the 'food revolution'. It would be nice if it was the majority of characters who took a real interest in proper food, rather than the token Jamie Oliver fan. It'll be interesting to see how it develops. I find soap stories do normally have a bit of a moral, so I'd bet Bianca and the kids get converted!

    Unfortunately Bianca is now in jail so she's a lost cause on the food front.
    It would have been good to see some kind of food journey from junk to good food on Eastenders tho.

I picked a few kilos, 3 kilos after sorting through. I put them, crushed, stones included, in a clean glass container, with 1.5 kilos of sugar and 2 litres of gin ( I may add another), I’ll leave them for 3/4 weeks then filter. Damson gin for Christmas.

I found some floppy- going black- carrots in the salad drawer, so I peeled and resuscitated those. Chopped them into a saucepan with a couple of cubes of vegetable stock and a litre of hot water. Then I added a couple of tablespoons of smooth peanut butter, a clove of garlic, 1 tsp of ground cumin, half a preserved lemon. Just stuff I had around. Simmered till the carrots were soft then blended in the @vitamixuk I can honestly say the vitamix is my most regularly used bit of kitchen kit. Anyway- hey presto- a high protein soup with fibre. I hope I test negative before I totally run out of food. #solo #covid #highprotein #soup

I partipated in the camp & protest along with my daughter @siennamarla playing in the samba band, part of the Pink Bloc. The camp was an incredible experience- the possibility of a different type of politics, of horizontal democracy. It was also a lot of fun. But our protest was tragically overshadowed by the 7/7 bombings in London. We wanted to create a new world but by the actions of a few disaffected British Muslim terrorists our positive movement for change was drowned out by hideous violence against normal ordinary people. The first pic is gazpacho with a banderilla from Lidl. They often have Spanish weeks and other nationality foods at a bargain price. I love those huge cartons of gazpacho- I glug it down like juice, especially in the heat. The banderillas are sold by the jar. Second pic is me in a primark vest, cardi, with an Anthropologie sale belt and old denim shorts from 10 years ago. Saturdays midsummer supperclub was mostly a bbq on Saturdays midsummer supperclub was mostly a bbq on the @biggreenegguk I divided the meal into fragrance families: vegetal, fougere (fern), green notes, fresh: asparagus, garden artichokes on the bbq, dolmades made from my garden vine leaves. Then citrus fragrances with yuzu, 🍊 🍋 bergamot glaze, salmon, smoked tofu steaks, vegan smoked salmon carrot. Next spice which in perfume is oriental spices: bbq mini aubergines with paprika seed oil, home ground garam masala, a tahini caper dressing. Then wood and resinous fragrances using rosemary oil brushed bbq mini peppers, pine syrup on labneh, mushrooms a la grecque with juniper, finally the floral family of fragrance with sour cherry and rose icecream, lavender shortbread  hearts and orange flower water meringue kisses. It was a lively warm evening- children were welcome. There was a bonfire, lots of wine and laughter. I buy welding gloves £12 from Amazon  to use with the bbq. I also use @pomoragoodfood oils #london
