At the Women’s Institute…

On Tuesday I was invited to speak at the Islington Women’s Institute.

The W.I has a fusty image, all jam and Jerusalem, but is actually a very important organisation for women with over 200,000 members. They have a campaigning side, for instance, save the bees and protection of women against violence. They famously slow-clapped Tony Blair at a speech.
The Islington W.I has a waiting list for membership, their age range starts much younger than popularly assumed. They have monthly events, ranging from talks by prominent women such as the first female beefeater (who then had to take her male colleagues to court for sexism) to cupcake decorating classes.
This was my first talk (well my second actually, the first was at The London Restaurant Festival and only about 6 people turned up). I would have liked to have worn pink tweed and a Margaret Thatcher hair set, something along the lines of Dolores Umbridge, the spiteful cat loving headmistress at Hogwarts. Lacking the Chanel suit, I decided to camp it up, wearing a hat, pearls, gloves, stockings and pink heels. And a dress of course!
Around 60 women attended and I spoke for 45 minutes. The questions were interesting and informed and helped to keep me on track. It’s been such a year, so many things have happened: starting the supperclub, the Harry Potter debacle, the London Underground issue, problems with my freeholder, meeting the food blogging community, encouraging others to start up their own supperclubs, learning to run a restaurant from scratch as opposed to merely cooking in one, writing a manifesto for home restaurants, dealing with publicity (previously I was behind the camera not in front of it), testing new dishes, launching The Underground Farmers & Craft Market, making Marmite cupcakes and getting my face on a jar of Marmite.
One question did trip me up however. A lady asked:

“Do you mind it when other people use your toilet?”

For some reason I replied: “No. I’m not anal”

I’m pretty sure this is the first time the word ‘anal’ has been used at a Women’s Institute lecture.
And it’s true, I don’t mind when 200 strange bottoms (from say, the farmer’s market) use my loo. I’ve travelled to India where I had to use my hand and water to wipe my bum (you get used to it, feels like the cleaner option actually), to Tibet when the toilet is generally a hole positioned over an entire room full of shit, used no doubt for fertilisation in that arid country. So yeah I’m cool with the whole toilet thing.
It was a pleasure to give the talk and I was amazed at my lack of nerves. Giving a little talk before each meal every week to 30 people must be good practice for public speaking!

    I had such a lovely time when I taught the cupcake class there, a really great group of women. Would love to see you in pink tweed!

    Hi there, glad the talk went well. I am about to post on my blog about my opening night in May for my first supperclub evening, and just wanted to check if I can mention you and your blog? I cant find anyone here in NZ that does them, and while mine wont be quite like yours (no Aga, no fab flat, and the chef will be in trainers!) it would be great if people can hear about why people want to do this(not to be on Restaurant. in my Front Room …), and the ethos behind them, rather than just thinking I have completly lost the plot, finally….

    In Scotland, we have Scottish Women's Rural Institutes http://www.swri.org.uk/ I've given quite a few talks but audiences have been a tad on the elderly side (not all but most). Until a year or so ago, they had a sort of high table where the speaker sat and took tea (and yummy baking) with the President and other grand folk; more recently we have all eaten together. The last talk I gave had a fixed raffle prize (I was given a ticket in a different colour) – delightful way to win, win. I hate judging their competitions because the ladies are better than me at everything; from embroidery to jam making. I tend to award joint prizes, especially when there are only a couple of entries. They pay my petrol and ingredients if I demo. I love the whole experience.

Serves 8

Equipment: 
Microwave
Cupcake or muffin tin

I use a red-skinned apple to make these, to get a hint of blush at the edges of the ‘petals’.

Ingredients:
4 Pink Lady or Royal Gala apples, cored, cut into quarters, sliced thinly into half moons
1 lemon, squeezed
1 pack all butter readymade puff pastry 320g, on a roll, cut into 8 strips about 6 cms long
100g of melted butter
1/2 jar of rose jam
1 or 2 tbsp cinnamon or cardamom, ground 
Pinch maldon salt
2 or 3 tbsp icing sugar

Instructions

Prepare a bowl of acidulated water (cold water with lemon juice) to prevent browning.
Core the apples, and cut them in quarters. Slice thinly into half-moons (a mandolin is useful for this). 
Put them into a large bowl of cold water with the lemon.
Microwave the bowl of sliced apples for 5 minutes until soft enough to bend slightly but not cook them.
Preheat the oven to 180ºC.
Roll out the puff pastry. Divide into 8 sections by cutting the roll into quarters then halving each quarter. You will end up with 8 approximately 6cm strips.
Brush the strip with melted butter then paint with a layer of rose jam. You can then dust with either ground cinnamon or cardamom.
Lay the apple slices along the top of the pastry strip, overlapping them. Fold up the bottom half of the pastry strip to make an pleat with the skin side of the apple half moon poking over the top.
Roll up the folded pastry strips until they look like a rose made of apple at the top
Place ‘rose’ side up, in a buttered cupcake tin
Repeat until all are done and bake for 20 -30 minutes.
Using a tea strainer or small sieve, sprinkle with icing sugar.

I’ve made a South African/ Botswana dish that is I’ve made a South African/ Botswana dish that is creamy samp with chakalaka. Samp is corn like hominy or pozole a native Indian or Mexican food. It’s strange that it’s a staple food in Africa. Corn is a new world good I think. Samp itself is quite bland, often eaten with beans. Chakalaka is delicious with peppers, Piri piri seasoning, ginger garlic onions tomatoes and carrots and baked beans.

This is in a neighbours garden who I met on Saturday while working in the front garden. Traditionally the British have front gardens but now they are turned into driveways and building are developed into flats. Only very rich people in london can afford houses. But the front is very important for the community- it’s how you meet your neighbours. On Saturday I visited 2 different sets of neighbours gardens- the first time since I moved to this street 23 years ago. Our front garden is communal and has been an unloved space- I’m trying to change that. Tonight I cleaned all the wheely bins. A yucky job but otherwise they smell so bad in summer. I was thinking about all the terrible dirty jobs that someone has to do- clearing up after a road accident, or sorting out sewers, or unblocking toilets. The wisteria which will grow over the arch planted by @christina_erskine ( I’ve always wanted a wisteria and they apparently add to the value of your house), the Swiss style bike/buggy shed. Needs to be painted dark green to match the walls. My friend Jim repaired the walls, the coping, and laid the  concrete plinth.
