Burns Night part 1

January 26, 2010 6 Comments Filed Under: Uncategorized

No sleep. Wake up. Crawl to Tescos in bashed up van, didn’t remember to order from cheaper/better places. Bleary eyed. See veggie haggis for sale. Think sod it, I’m cheating, I’ll buy it, not make it. Never cheat normally. Whole point of restaurant is not to cheat. Get home. Unload van. Toast oatmeal for Cranachan dessert. It’s taking forever. Look at Aga temperature dial. Heart stopping moment: FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK. It’s not working. It’s OFF. Whaaaat! Look at ‘Do not switch this off or you will DIE’ plug: it’s on.

Brain slowly whirrs. Um, fuse? How do I change plug fuse? Is this something I know how to do? Can’t remember, been long time since I did it. Do I have any fuses even?
SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT
Ring Laura James of Aga who is a friend. A man answers. Sounds very officey even though I know it’s their home. He sounds, erm, a bit testy that I’m calling him in Norfolk about my Aga in Kilburn. As well he might be. But I’m in no mood for logic. Eventually I ask if he is Laura’s husband, he says yes. He says Laura coming home tomorrow. Why don’t I call the local Aga shop in Marylebone. BOLLOCKS BOLLOCKS BOLLOCKS
Go to laptop. Look up Aga number. Call it. Woman answers and I can’t understand anything she is saying. I know she is speaking English but my brain, stalled by fatigue and panic, won’t work properly. “Do you normally get serviced by Aga?” she says. I ask her to repeat this. It feels like the most stupid question in the world. Yes, I reply dully, of course I do, I’ve got an Aga. Who else would service it? British Telecom? “Madam, it’s just that some of our customers use other companies to service their Agas. Anyway we can get a service engineer out to you tomorrow”…she says, tapping on invisible computer keys.
I’m now hyperventilating. TOMORROW AFTERNOON? I’VE GOT 30 PEOPLE COMING FOR DINNER TONIGHT! AND THEY ARE SCOTTISH! I screech. This seems to work. She asks lightly “have you tried reigniting the pilot light?”. Pilot light? I think. There is a pilot light? HOW DO I DO THAT? I wail.
“The instructions are on the door” she says in that ‘I’m not going to nurse you through this’ way. Clenching my iphone to my ear with my shoulder, I open one of the oven doors that doesn’t contain an oven. I’ve never looked at it before. There are wires and switches. On the back of the door there is a metal plate with instructions and drawings. It looks a bit like a boiler and I think there probably should be a flame inside the little window. There isn’t. The Aga lady is still talking to me, albeit muffled…there is no flame I say. “Maybe the wind blew out the pilot light” she says. “Were there strong winds last night?” I look wildly around my kitchen, thinking how can the wind blow out a flame indoors? encased in a cast iron oven? This makes no sense!
I start flicking at switches, I see something on a dial saying ‘ignition position’. HAHAHAHAHA by doing this I make a flame…I’ve reignited the pilot! I’VE DONE IT!!!! I’VE ‘FIXED’ THE AGA!!!
Limp after this rush of adrenalin, I hang up on the Aga lady. I’m now fully awake. But I have to wait several hours before the Aga is heated up again enough to cook dinner.

Agas are quite the best, until that is, they stop working. I had to have a conventional cooker for recipe testing (Kids' Kitchen) and actually, here we go: the baking is just as good as in the Aga (Matt Fort didn't pay me to say that). I have tried and tried to get Aga to help fund events for less affluent kids and although, they have donated some aprons etc I haven't got much further. Dawn Roads is fisrt class but as for their marketing director…. (he asked what I was doing at a conference, if all I did was encourage kids to cook – overheard by another conference goer).I hate saying this but I've walked away from Aga, pretty much convinced that Aga is quite happy with their market and the rest of the world can bake their cakes in microwaves, if they are lucky enough to own one. What I haven’t told you is that my conventional cooker is also made by Aga and it is amazing. If Laura James is kind, perhaps she can help with a back up – would be useful when, you write your cookery book.

I'm bemused by the switch – what is electric on your aga?
My parents have a gas one – we used to have to periodically relight the pilot light with very long matches.
Well done for sorting it out – it's no mean feat 🙂

Another string to your bow – lighting pilot lights. You learn something new every day. Well done you.

After tea and a wet sauna, a large Latvian man called Oleg whipped us with giant bunches of oak leaves. This ‘parenie’ felt great, like forest bathing. The smell of the leaves, the stimulation to the circulation. Then we were given a salt and honey scrub, a mud pack, and finished with shots of vodka and plates of pickles. Fantastic experience, highly recommend. #london #spa #russianspa #birthday by the way the music is by my favourite Russian pop star

I went to a pre Christmas event at @themontgomerie I went to a pre Christmas event at @themontgomeriegarden hotel in Bloomsbury last night. It was hosted by the German tourist board promoting Saxony. I saw mini workshops of crafts from Nuremberg- these little 25 point Moravian paper stars ( each one takes an hour to make), finely whittled & carved wooden Christmas decorations , @meissen_germany porcelain, smoking wooden figurines ( filled with incense, nutcrackers, authentic stollen, Nuremberg ginger bread, white mulled wine and some lovely canapés. Going to try to make a stollen myself. You must always cut it in the middle, so you can put it together so it doesn’t get stale. I found out Colditz, the famous TV drama is in Saxons. I’d love to visit. It all got me in the Christmas mood @visit_germany @visitsaxony_ @visitdresden #christmas #stöllen #germanyinlondon
On the secret platform of the jubilee line at Char On the secret platform of the jubilee line at Charing Cross, now disused, we were treated to a fabulous cheese inspired fashion show by the fashion students of @ualfoundation and @3ddafoundation The cheeses featured were cantal, comté, tomme de savoie, saint nectaire, fourme d’ambert, époisses, Brills-savaging, Camembert, Brie and langres. The outfits were so creative and deeply researched by the designers. @thecheeseexplorer explained that during the tastings, some designers had never tasted those cheeses before. Anglo French @tatty_macleod came and is one of the judges. It was surreal and fun. Afterwards we were treated to a groaning cheese platter table at the bottom of the escalators. Then I joined the commuters of the london tube journeying home. Food and fashion are often opposed: to be fashionable you must not eat. This turns it on its head. @hopscotch_season #london #cheese #fashionandfood #cheesesoffrance
