I have an Aga oven which is on all the time so I’m motivated to make oven-based recipes. The rule with an Aga is to cook 20% on top, and 80% in the ovens.
Last week I made an easy high protein recipe: roast tofu block. I’m a big fan of tofu generally but this is the easiest method to cook it. Sainsburys are stocking smoked and marinated firm tofu blocks at a reasonable price (£1.34). Usually it’s hard to find decent tofu unless you go to an Asian/Japanese shop where they stock it from super soft/silky to very firm. Tofu is ultimately a texture thing. In Japan tofu can be so silky as to taste like double cream with a slight beany flavour. They have that for breakfast.
If you can only get soft tofu, you can press it to make it firmer by weighing it down to remove the liquid.

Roast Tofu Block
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 300 g marinated/smoked/plain tofu block
- 4 tbsp soy sauce/tamari sauce
- 3 tbsp maple syrup
- thumb fresh ginger, grated
- 1 fresh chilli, finely sliced
- salt and pepper
Instructions
- Preheat your oven for 20 minutes to 180C. Grease a small oven tray with olive oil.
- Score the tofu diagonally on the top so the marinating liquid can penetrate
- The marinated tofu comes already marinated in soy sauce. You can add a little more soy sauce to this. If you have plain tofu, add extra soy sauce and leave it to marinate for an hour or so before cooking.
- Add the maple syrup, ginger, chilli, salt and pepper. Feel free to add your own spices and flavourings such as chopped spring onions, garlic, sesame seeds.
- Put in the oven for 20 to 30 minutes to roast. The maple syrup goes all caramelly which is delicious.
- You can eat this as is - hot or add the block to noodles or rice or vegetables.
