Last night’s Indian theme was a success generally. Lovely guests and I was glad to get a chance to chat to them afterwards, particularly cake-maker extraordinaire Lavender bakery and her ‘beau’. Lavender and I are planning an Underground tea in the future. Her fiancé, like me, was brought up in North-West London. We had a nice shared moment, reminiscing about the burger joints Maxwells and Calamity Jane in Hampstead. As a teen it was the height of sophistication to spend Saturday nights there after a party. But then again I remember the opening of the first MacDonald’s in the UK, in Holloway. The orange plastic seats, the milk shakes, the cheap prices, the restricted menu, were a revelation.

Another guest described how her mother blew up her Aga with a can of condensed milk. She just put the can in the Aga, probably to make dulce de leche, and it exploded, bursting through the door, all over the kitchen. She was in her bedroom at the time and thought it was an IRA bomb. Insurance paid for another Aga!
The Sunday Express came and the photographer confessed that he and his Polish girlfriend are thinking of doing the same thing.

“We came out of a Polish restaurant, looked at each other and said ‘that was so poor, we can do better than this!'”

I’ve asked him to keep me posted as I am just as interested in other people’s home restaurants.

As with every week, when you are cooking on such a large scale, some recipes less tried than others, you are happier with some things than others.
An outright success: the Bombay mix, the chickpea curry and the kulfi in which you could really taste the saffron. My little volunteer staff, consisting of Sandrine the waitress and Charlie Nelson in the kitchen, liked it so much we had seconds afterwards. Here, in the interests of revealing my sauces, hehe, is the recipe from videojug, have a go, it’s so easy. Replace the ‘Cool Whip’ with whipping cream.

I wasn’t so happy with my naan bread, which was a bit like milk bread somehow. Need to work on that one. Maybe it needs to be done on top of the Aga rather than in the oven?

I went around with a little jug of melted ghee, which for the brave and the non-dieting, could be poured on top of their curry. I got this idea from the restaurant I visited last September for the Onam festival, so sinful but so delicious.
I think that one of the appeals of a home restaurant, it has to be said, is that you get to look round someone’s house. Rather like those people that book appointments with estate agents to see properties with no intention of buying, just to get a look inside? I am always curious about people’s houses. A home restaurant is a riveting combination of Come dine with me, Masterchef and Location, location.

Note to future guests: if you want to smoke, go out the back not the front, we don’t want to attract attention. 
No lost property this week. But I think that man’s lunch from 2 weeks back is starting to move of its own accord so will have to chuck.

    Sounds like a great evening. I was on a bread course recently and was told nann bread is difficult to make unless you have a tandoori oven 🙁 I would love to be able to make it at home.

    Oh thanks Jules…so it’s not my incompetance then. Mind you I had some this morning (with Marmite) and it was nice but not very Indian.

I picked a few kilos, 3 kilos after sorting through. I put them, crushed, stones included, in a clean glass container, with 1.5 kilos of sugar and 2 litres of gin ( I may add another), I’ll leave them for 3/4 weeks then filter. I found some floppy- going black- carrots in the salad drawer, so I peeled and resuscitated those. Chopped them into a saucepan with a couple of cubes of vegetable stock and a litre of hot water. Then I added a couple of tablespoons of smooth peanut butter, a clove of garlic, 1 tsp of ground cumin, half a preserved lemon. Just stuff I had around. Simmered till the carrots were soft then blended in the @vitamixuk I can honestly say the vitamix is my most regularly used bit of kitchen kit. Anyway- hey presto- a high protein soup with fibre. I hope I test negative before I totally run out of food. #solo #covid #highprotein #soup

I partipated in the camp & protest along with my daughter @siennamarla playing in the samba band, part of the Pink Bloc. The camp was an incredible experience- the possibility of a different type of politics, of horizontal democracy. It was also a lot of fun. But our protest was tragically overshadowed by the 7/7 bombings in London. We wanted to create a new world but by the actions of a few disaffected British Muslim terrorists our positive movement for change was drowned out by hideous violence against normal ordinary people. The first pic is gazpacho with a banderilla from Lidl. They often have Spanish weeks and other nationality foods at a bargain price. I love those huge cartons of gazpacho- I glug it down like juice, especially in the heat. The banderillas are sold by the jar. Second pic is me in a primark vest, cardi, with an Anthropologie sale belt and old denim shorts from 10 years ago. Saturdays midsummer supperclub was mostly a bbq on Saturdays midsummer supperclub was mostly a bbq on the @biggreenegguk I divided the meal into fragrance families: vegetal, fougere (fern), green notes, fresh: asparagus, garden artichokes on the bbq, dolmades made from my garden vine leaves. Then citrus fragrances with yuzu, 🍊 🍋 bergamot glaze, salmon, smoked tofu steaks, vegan smoked salmon carrot. Next spice which in perfume is oriental spices: bbq mini aubergines with paprika seed oil, home ground garam masala, a tahini caper dressing. Then wood and resinous fragrances using rosemary oil brushed bbq mini peppers, pine syrup on labneh, mushrooms a la grecque with juniper, finally the floral family of fragrance with sour cherry and rose icecream, lavender shortbread  hearts and orange flower water meringue kisses. It was a lively warm evening- children were welcome. There was a bonfire, lots of wine and laughter. I buy welding gloves £12 from Amazon  to use with the bbq. I also use @pomoragoodfood oils #london
